Administrative Staff

I am extremely excited to be given the opportunity to lead East Voyager to even greater excellence. I possess over 40 years of classroom teaching and administrative experience and I look forward to building relationships with the parents, students, and staff of this amazing school.

Dr. Kris Black

I’m ecstatic to be joining EVA of Charlotte as the Dean of Academics and Faculty to better support our school, teachers, and students towards building our mission of strong academics, intercultural competence, and bilingual proficiency! I was born and raised in Columbia, SC and am a first-generation American-born Chinese. I have my ACTFL OPI for Advanced-High in Mandarin and am American Board for Certification in Mathematics. I have taught for a total of 6 years: 2 years in America at East Point Academy, SC’s first Mandarin-immersion school. During my time there, I taught 5k and 1st grade and was elected Mandarin Teacher of the Year my first year teaching there. But I'm particularly proud of my students, and that during my 2nd year of teaching, 3 of my first grade students who participated in the Math Kangaroo international competition were ranked 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in their grade group in SC. The remaining 4 years I taught English as a Foreign Language Expert at a public elementary school in Beijing, China (called The Primary School attached to XiCheng Foreign Language School of Beijing); there I taught the entire school, from 1st grade up to 6th. I have my Bachelors of Science from USC, where I majored in Economics and doubled minored in Mathematics and Chinese studies. I also have my Masters in Education from Harvard University where I researched about education policy, charter schools, bilingualism, literacy, dyslexia, and how to better read and understand research itself. I also have attended multiple STARTALK trainings and meetings about learning and teaching a second language. In my spare time, I love to play badminton (am starting to try out Crossfit), bake, cook, organize, and eat all different kinds of yummy foods. Education, to me, is a strong collaboration between the student, teachers, parents, and administrators, and I am looking forward to working together towards a great school year. Go Voyagers!
